If 500-600 hp is all your after, I wouldn't even consider 18 degree stuff. Its all spendy and will require special intake, rockers, pushrods, headers, etc. A 215-220cc head with a moderate solid roller should do it easily....
I agree, for that power level, I'd stick with 23 degree stuff.
