What fuel
Hey guys, its getting about that time for me to fire up the Opel. :D All I have left to do is have some headers made. My question is what fuel do I need to run, The engine is a 418 18degree SBC with 13:8 to 1 CR. I know that I can get 110 (purple colored) pretty close by. I was informed that I needed 112 but wanted to double check. Also is C12 the same as 112? If I need 112, could it be possible to mix 110 and 112. The reason I ask is the place I called about getting 112 said that is was $65 for 5 gallons. That seems a little high to me. Sorry about all the questions. Thanks in advance.

i would call vp racing fuels and ask them what to use.
|
I will run 110 up to 14:1, but I will take camshaft design into account. 106 - 108 sep with 268+ intake duration doesn't have the dynamic compression ratio that I feel warrants C12. I have 3 customer engines in the 13.5 - 14.0 range that run every weekend on 110, they are on a 3 season freshen up cycle 2 have been freshened up once and one is on it's second freshen up cycle with the original pistons.
I moved my car to alcohol some time ago, cost per run was cut in half, makes better power, cool down time is basically nothing which takes one more thing out of equation, allowing me to prepare for the next round a little better. Makes it nice being able to basically hot lap a 7 second altered. |
Thanks guys, I will call VP to double check. There is a big difference in what I would have to pay for 112 ad what I can get 110 for.
|
I just got through talking with VP and they suggest using C12. I guess I will have to bite the bullet. I have always used 110 I got from BP.

Switch that SB over to Methenol,or E-85!That Race Fuel Price thing is BU!!$#!T!! @13.8 that motor would be a GREAT E-85 Canadate!! You Here guys Complain about Alcohol.but @ 1.85 per Gallon, that about what 1 Runs takes for Me,1 to 1 1/2 Gallons. So there AINT NO Room for that OVERPRICED Race Gas around Here!!! Later G 8) |

VP113™
Offering substantial power gains at a competitive price, VP113 is oxygenated to street gas levels. Formulated for naturally aspirated engines with CRs up to approximately 14:1. VP113 makes up to 2% more power than competitive 110 octane fuels, with gains of 3-4% in engine applications with poor or marginal fuel vaporization qualities. Its oxygenation also yields a higher effective octane rating and greater protection against detonation. May require a tuning change, including increase in jet size, for optimum performance. I run the Q16, but this will work just fine for you. |
Hey guys, appreciate all the info. Looks like I will be switching over to alcohol. I can get it for $5 a gallon vise $12.60 a gallon. I will be doing a lot of reading on what I need to do as far as maintenance and running top lube and all. Never ran alcohol before.

Pretty serious price difference between GA and AZ. I pay $102 a drum for methanol..
You will be happy with the switch. Are you going with injection or carb? |
The last drum I bought was $129.00.

If you know anyone who can get it for you, we run industrial methanol. Exact same thing without the fancy sticker on the drum.

Alky
I was Thinking that when I used VP,it was M1?I have a VP Barrel from last season still here I'll look at it and let you know?
You DO NOT NEED the M5! Later G 8) |
Standard Methanol is M1.
M1™ M1 Racing Methanol has a 99.95% minimum purity - the highest purity available in the U.S. With M1, engines run cooler and are less subject to corrosion. VP uses only lined drums which prohibit rust, corrosion and metal deposits that can contaminate fuel delivery systems. Recommended for all methanol-legal racing applications. M3™ Like M1, M3 starts with methanol of the highest purity, but includes lubrication and combustion additives for an extra boost. M3 offers a wider range of jetting options, making jetting easier and more consistent. For bracket racers, variations in ET from run to run will be substantially reduced. With better tuning and cleaner, more efficient combustion, M3 makes more power and yields better throttle response than any standard methanol on the market. M3's improved combustion also reduces the noxious fumes associated with methanol fuels, so it's much easier on the eyes and nose. For 60-70% of methanol applications, M3 won't require jetting or timing changes-just pour it in and get an immediate performance improvement in all areas. In the other 30-40%, M3's added vaporization may actually hurt volumetric efficiency and performance, which is what lead to the development of M5. M3 is not pure methanol and won't pass a water test. New! M5™ M5 is simply the best performing methanol on the market. With its upgraded combustion additives, M5 will make more power than M3, i.e., 5-7% more power than standard methanol, while offering the same or better protection against detonation. Like M3, M5's improved vaporization offers a wider acceptable range of air/fuel ratios and tuning. It also yields faster combustion speeds which lead to closer EGT's from cylinder to cylinder, providing more consistent performance from run to run. M5 is not pure methanol and won't pass a water test. |
Thanks guys, I just got quoted $320 for a barrel of M5 I will call him back and tell him I need M1
|
Well I found a place in a town about 30 min from me, its a go cart place and they want $175 a barrel. I will keep looking though, I told them that is a lot better than the $5 a gallon they wanted to charge me the other day. He siad it gets cheaper the more I buy....I should have told him I wanted to buy in bulk :D
|
Stick with the M1.
I ran the M5 a few times, After a little tuning I picked up .03 and 1/2 a MPH but I spent most of that season set up for Super Comp so it didn't matter. With the M5 I noticed a pretty severe reaction to un-coated/un-anodized aluminum. If allowed to sit in my aluminum cell for more than a couple of hours it would become hot to the point of rolling itself around in the tank. |
I've run a few different fuels, some require a higher octane for the same engine than what VP will handle. Look for Track Tek 114 or Sunoco HCR 114, either should be fine for yours and a bit cheaper than the C12. I ran the Track Tek on a 14 to 1 447 ci SB2 with no issues.

Honestly, VP is no better then any other brand, its not like they are doing anything other then putting it in their drum. I sell fuel up here on the side, I've tried almost every brand out there, best thing I can say is stay away from regen fuel, its no where near as pure. This is one of the questions I always ask before buying, and normally get a spec sheet from the tanker. Greg where did you find VP m1 that cheap ? I have a wholesaler in and its not close to that ? |
M1
I had My Pops bring it up from DOWN SOUTH,Northern Indiana.I was REALY Surprised when He pulled in and I saw what He had.........!

Sooo I guess you can order it from a VP dealer and have it shipped to your house? That would be great.
