BBC heads
I have posted about head recomendation before..but I am getting ready to purchase something...but I still don't know which ones to get. I have it narrowed to either -2x brodix with 340 cc intake ports or the AFR but can't decide between 325 and the 345. Motor is a 13.1 540 with a solid roller .726 int .737 exh dur at 50 around 274 int 284 exh ..can't remember exactly don't have card with me...but the question is "What size intake ports would be best for a 540 ci 7000 rpm max? " The prices are the same for 325 or 345. They sell a cnc ported 335 also and a 357 for much more money. I want to get the right ones but don't want to go too big. Again this is a 7000 rpm motor. Car is 3050 lb 1/8 mile bracket car with powerglide with brake. 5.14 gears and 32 x 14 tires. 5500 converter

my personal opinion, get the AFR's but skip the 345's and get the 357's. they are a great head. I ran them for years trouble free and awesome power out of the box. They had better power than a set of 355 cnc darts that I had before them. I had my heads on a 572. a friend of mine runs them on a 555 bbc and had the motor dynoed at 945 hp at 7600 rpm with a single carb. You won't be disapointed.
|
Thanks...my only concern was the rpm range. I don't take this engine past 7000( too poor to build another one if it blows up  ) and wasn't sure how much head I need for that relatively low rpm.
|
7000 rpm on a 540, you need a good head. No sense on just settling for something now. Get what you should get the first time out. That's how you save money. Many guys have just bought parts just to settle knowing they should have bought the other one, that's where the self ass kicking comes in. Buy the better ones now.

Brodix 2x's :D The afr's seem to be a good head but customer service is poor there. There is a post on another site about a set of SBC heads that had terrible castings and got no help from AFR. I've seen some fast 540's with brodix heads.

I like Dart heads but i agree with Hammertime about Brodix being on some fast cars.

My main question isn't really which BRAND of head or what head in particular...as I know that opinions will vary greatly on that. What I really wanted to know was "How much head in terms of intake port volume would a 540 such as this need if the RPMS were kept at 7000 ? " I obviously don't want to buy too small, but at the same time it doesn't make much sense to put a head on it big enough to pull to 8000 rpm when I know I won't twist it that tight. |
I am understanding that now Curtis has a smaller version of his Edlebrock24 deg for engines that are a little smaller than the original application was for. If he hs it developed yet that will surely be the best bang for the book.

www.raceflowdevelopment.com Ed All 3 are designed around 4.53" or larger bores, .. . but have three different port cross sections, .. smaller is a 366cc head with a 2.3" intake and flows and honest 435, .. the first one 380cc and flows 460, .. and a new one still under development 390 cc, 480 cfm, .. Don't put too much into the port cc number, .. these are very fast airspeed ports with large valve bowls. The Victor Jr CnC designed for 4.28" stock style bore blocks is on hold until some design issues are fixed with that casting. Curtis |

The Brodix 2x 340 is one of my favorite castings to port, ..
it's a 26* head but still works very well, .. Get the chamber cnc option, .. or have them professionaly ported. C |
for cboggs, i know i'm jumping on someone else's questions, but have you had a chance to do or flow the dart cnc 380's rect port? any good or bad?

joe sherman built a 540 using 315 cnc afr heads with his 10.5:1 compression got 752torque and 829 horseypower.it is posted in this or another forum somewhere.that was a 4000-6500 rpm motor.so to answer your question if i was in your shoes id place my bet on the 335 afr heads.
let me ask you this...how often do you see magazine articles include brodix heads???how often afrs???my last 10 yrs of reading them will point to overwhelming afr heads being used more than others!!! also i know numbers arnt everything when comparing airflow...but compare just about any other head to the afr when looking at the same port size and clearly brodix is usually lower than dart canfield and especially the afr's. i have dart 355s on my pump gas 572 and wish i woulda put my nickels on the 335's cause they are good for the ceiling of 7000 which was what my goal is also. |
I already bought the -2x's thanks for your reply though.
