Exterior
Some people believe red Vettes are the best Vettes, but regardless of your preferences, Bright Red does indeed look good on this drop top and covers the rounder front fascia and rounded tail, which became a regular feature beginning in 1991. Also in back, we note large rectangular exhaust tips under the valance, veering from stock pipe just as the 17-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels veer from factory wheels in some additions that set this car apart. The stamped letters of Corvette on the back have been filled with white, which is a great compliment to the white canvas soft top which, aside from typical soiling, looks to be in great shape and its plastic window does show some hazing. Meanwhile, the profile of the car is that of a chisel, sharp noses and straight, and the iconic fender vents are four parallel bands that taper rearward. The 40 series tires take a supporting role to the starring wheels which really shine. A ding, a touched up scratch, some paint runs, and edge chip are the imperfections we note.
Interior
Red door panels are accentuated by the black armrest which also contains window and mirror controls on the driver's side. New red leather sport seats are high backed and supportive and split by a black center console that houses the shifter, now with a red knob. A red rimmed aftermarket steering wheel has an NRG racing hub with a red anodized ring, all leading to the standard C4 gauge cluster that arches around a center digital display. The center stack has the integrated and orange lit A/C controls and AM/FM/Cassette radio. Red carpeted coverings on the lower dash match what's on the floor, plush carpet with black Corvette mats that have absorbed all the usage. The cargo area is also covered with red carpet and as typical, has some areas of fading.
Drivetrain
Under the forward leaning hood is a 5.7 liter LT1 V8 rated at 300 horsepower. Some red dress up items spruce up the very clean bay while our consignor states that a freshly serviced Optispark is on board, along with new front seals, water pump, thermostat, plug wires, plugs, and battery plus reprogrammed competition chip. It's also here where you'll find the new headlight motors. A 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission backs up the LT1 and sends power to the 2.59 gears with limited slip in the back. New drilled and slotted rotors accompany the power disc brakes at all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Very clean underneath as well with, no surprise, red brake calipers providing some color! Hooker headers start the exhaust system which is dual and does not include catalytic converters but does enter original equipment mufflers just before exiting out back. All is dry underneath and knuckles are clear. Front and rear suspension are both independent and comprise the Corvette's complex arrangement of fiberglass leaf springs, aluminum control arms, trailing links, and stabilizer bar.
Drive-Ability
Despite Corvette's ever increasing horsepower through the generations, the 5.7 is no slouch and presented quite the ride when C4's were unleashed on the public. This one provides hefty acceleration, above average handling, and neck snapping braking. And it sounds fantastic. The horn doesn't work but all other functions do as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A red ragtop Corvette, it doesn't get much more iconic. And here's a well sorted example with relatively low mileage, a clean interior, and an immaculate undercarriage. You've always wanted a red Vette and well, in the words of Mr. Potter, your ship has just come in! Make it a wonderful life and pick up this rocking red roadster today!
