Makino A88 5-Axis Horizontal Machining Center — Turnkey Billet Block / Motorsports Package
This is about as turnkey a 5-axis setup as you'll find without spending a million-plus. Purchased originally to produce our own billet blocks; we've moved to other projects and no longer need it. It came to us from aerospace and is still extremely accurate. Dart and Edelbrock have relied on these exact machines for years for their reliability and ease of maintenance.
The size, power, and full 5-axis capability make it a fit for far more than blocks: billet cylinder heads, billet rear end housings, portal axles, A-arms and suspension components, intake manifolds, supercharger housings and rotors, and just about any large or small-but-complex motorsport part you want to cut. Aerospace, defense, and general precision work too — this machine isn't limited to engine parts.
Machine
• Makino A88, full 4th + full 5th axis (360,000 positions). We've run simultaneous 5-axis but mostly 3+2 work.
• Year: 2000 — Control: Makino Professional 3 — Hours: hour meter present but not verified, so not represented as accurate.
• Spindle: 12,000 RPM, 33.5 HP continuous / 40 HP for 30 min. Direct-drive, no gearbox — 420 Nm peak @ 500 RPM, 114 Nm @ 2,500 RPM. Smooth and quiet to 12k. 1,000 PSI through-spindle coolant, overhead shower coolant nozzles, and chip conveyor.
• Twin 630mm (24.8" × 24.8") square pallets: one custom Makino pallet with integrated Tsudakoma RNCK-501 5th-axis rotary (500mm platter), one T-slot pallet, one spare drilled-and-tapped pallet.
• Fits 5.3" bore-space billet blocks even on the 5th-axis table.
• Dual ballscrews + dual motors on Y and Z. All ballscrews thermally compensated with temp-controlled oil through their cores.
• 90-tool hive magazine, CAT 50. Tool-change limits 23.6" long × 11.8" dia, 44 lb — long enough for main-bore and cam-tunnel drills and boring bars.
• Built-in tool-touch probe + Renishaw part-probing system (probe not included).
• Power: runs on 208–230V 3-phase — most shops run it without modifying their service. Includes a 460V step-down transformer if you have 460V power.
Tooling & workholding included — est. $43,000+ used-market value, figured conservatively
• 400+ tools total, valued at bottom-end used eBay pricing on the holders alone (~$25k). Shrink-fit and specialty holders included. This number does NOT include the cutting tools — carbide endmills, coolant-through carbide drills, insert/diamond face mills, and boring heads, most in perfect condition.
• Garant ZeroClamp quick-change system on the 5th-axis platter — locates within microns, clamps on shop air, swaps fixtures in seconds. $8k in parts at our cost; $15k+ new from ZeroClamp. Fixture built in-house.
• Spare drilled-and-tapped pallet ($5k at auction).
• (2) 5th Axis V562 dovetail vises ($1,250 ea. new), 5th Axis RL96A-411 riser ($1,500 new), RL96 base ($925 new).
• Shop-made Mitee-Bite rail vises, V-blocks, and 5th Axis 96mm-to-ZeroClamp adapters — not priced above.
• Tool storage: 90-tool machine magazine (currently full), five angled racks (80-tool capacity each, mostly full), and a shop-built 5-tier vertical rack (~60 tools) — 400+ tools total.
The tooling and workholding alone is most of what a billet-block shop would otherwise spend months assembling — and it's valued here at the low end, not padded.
Also included
3D machine models (4- and 5-axis) for toolpath checking and setups in Fusion 360, plus 4- and 5-axis Fusion 360 post processors. Can include base tooling files, fixture drawings, and programs so you can make more.
New Makino this size — bare, no tooling, no pallets, no fixtures — is $1M+ today. Set it on your floor and run parts immediately. Running daily until mid-September 2026 and available to demo under power.
