These E36 M3 manual coupes are universally recognized as being perfectly balanced for performance driving. They readily respond to all driver inputs. A smooth driver can bring the car very close to the limits of adhesion without understeering or oversteering. They are equally capable in high speed sweeper corners and quick chicanes.
This would be an ideal car for a relatively new track driver. These cars are a bargain. Although no longer considered disposable, they represent a minor investment compared to modern high performance Porsches, BMWs, Corvettes and Supras. Spare parts are inexpensive and readily available. Another advantage is that this model represents the last of the truly analog cars. No fancy traction or stability control; ABS only. No computer interfering with throttle application. A drivers’ car.
Those living in climates with hot summers will rejoice at the fact the M3 never overheats. I have driven several 114 degree ambient days at Thunderhill Raceway without the least concern that I would miss a session due to overheating. Try that in other performance cars. You can then drive home in a fully functioning air conditioned passenger car. No trailers, or trucks to haul trailers, necessary.
Note: The primitive traction control is disabled. The original traction control consisted of a second butterfly valve upstream from the throttle body. If the computer felt the car oversteering, it would shut the extra butterfly valve and disable the throttle. This makes a bad situation worse by sending more weight to the front end and further destabilizing rear of the car.
Additionally, this car could easily be converted to a sanctioned race car. The roll bar is overbuilt and designed to later incorporate door bars and full contain dash bars. The E36 generation is within two years vintage racing qualification. Someone interested in these events could use the interim period to master the car at HPDE (cheaper) events.
Selling this car because (1) I no longer participate in 15+ HPDE events per year and (2) spouse wants this and two other cars gone from driveway.
