“Among these was the #82 Hooters Ford, which was being driven by Mark Stahl (like Kulwicki, an owner-driver) and had failed to qualify for the first three events of the season. Atlanta Motor Speedway was considered to be Hooters’ home track, as the restaurant chain is based in Atlanta, and having a car make the event would help give them some visibility both at the track and for the home television audience. They would not get it from Stahl, as he once again failed to qualify.”
“Stahl competed in 30 races in the Winston Cup Series between 1981 and 1993;[5] his best finish was 16th in 1986 at Darlington Raceway.[6] He also failed to qualify for 34 additional events.[7] In 1987 Stahl posted the fastest time in second-round qualifying for the 1987 Winston 500, becoming part of the fastest field in NASCAR history.[8] He moved to South Carolina in 1991 to further his racing career.[1] In 1990 Stahl acquired sponsorship from Hooters; his failing to qualify for the 1991 Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta International Raceway led to 1992 Winston Cup Series Champion Alan Kulwicki picking up the sponsorship for the event,[9] and later receiving the sponsorship full-time.”
The car was acquired by the current owner in 2003. It was reported by the prior owner to have been used in the movie Days of Thunder. The car was vintage raced in California with HSCR, VARA and NASA events. It was last raced at the Coronado Speed Festival 2012. Since then it has been stored in the owners collection and run occasionally at open track events.
Recent services performed include new fuel lines from the fuel pump to the carburetor and fuel pressure gauge. Oil and filter change. New spark plugs. Brake fluid flush and bleed. General clean up. The vehicle will need tires, some brake system work and a full race preparation prior to racing the car.
