(MAYBE) IT’S NOT FOR THE COUNTRY CLUB SET

We finally got it down in the last 2-3 years of this car’s development. As Club Racers we faced many adversities and funding was somewhere behind finding development. Parts were never an issue and should not be. “Just in case” there is a complete set of extra body panels.” My son and I did it ourselves. There is an AMC person who contributed significantly. Lots of trial and error because those still racing them…were still racing them, you understand.

The car has not competed in recent times: That is it’s advantage. Some Spirits ended on dirt tracks. This is not one of those.
The AMC-Spirit GT derives from NASCAR/Matador thru Javelin/SCCA TransAm terror to this platform. There were stunning NHRA Drag Race “Gremmies” but Spirit only competed rarely. It won its’ class in V-8 configuration at Nürburgring. Occasionally a Spirit will appear in Vintage classes. There was a Spirit in Florida running the I-4. Most are surprised this car is a marvelously developed I-6. Kinda sounds like an old Healey!

This is a “mechanic’s car; it is not a mechanic’s special”. The early problems we experienced were ‘dumb things’ like trying to run a power steering pump. (There is a Volvo electric pump on YouTube that seems like a universal.)

Remember, we were club racers and SCCA would extend the comp license with two (finished) events a year. Dumb as it seems, it took two years of track time to find an alternator bracket. As a mechanic, you will like this one. We were developing horsepower so we changed from AMC15 to AMC20 style. These were lockers and even the HD20 failed. We solved that.
My early wheel-to-wheel experience was in SCCA/HP in the 1970’s. We qualified for the National Championships twice with a 10th and 12th overall finish: 25-30 cars in the event. We built that car also. The Spirit-GT is a ‘big-Bugeye’…at least that I how she is set up now.

This meant front spring rates…two or three years shot and miss…now she handles like a Spite…at least that’s how she’s driven. (Well, the HP car had a 10,500 redline and the AMC does everything it’s gonna do and stops at 5,200.) That’s where the fun begins.

The Weber carb engine pulls a tight rear end through a very lovely T-5. The sound is quite lovely as she shifts from 5th through 4th and into 3rd in several places at Road Atlanta. She’s been on NASCAR Rovals (Charotte) and Barber Motorsports Park. Fun to drive, fun to own and fun to work on and maybe spoil someone’s afternoon…as she often does!

She’s not perfect so she will break your heart just as all race cars can and do! She can make RX-7’s insane and handles as well as the Miata. Actually, there are pix where she outhandles Miata.

Fun car. Must pass it on. Thanks for your consideration. Please, only serious calls and bench racers. I dunno, maybe she’s perfect for the country club! Sure would be a super-fine ‘track car’.

AMC Spirit GT. IMSA "Clone" car...with contemporary upgrades. Engine new with one event, tranny has three events. Both professionally completed. Spares include doors, hood, rear hatch, spoiler. Extra blocks and one short block. Head, manifold...great wheel package.

This car runs very well. It's the I-6 that ran IMSA...Amos Johnson and others. This is a great SCCA car that was designed for long races. It's a very nice Vintage Car...and would be lots of fun for track days. The car has working headlights/tail lights...so, I always thought it would be a fun Saturday night 'rat rod'. There is a title. Please see information sheet in "Photos". Ask for more...thanks for looking! It's a great ride. I just got a little too old!
